Hunger Games Nail Art!

Hello tributes!

Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor! In honor of tonight’s release of the new Hunger Games trilogy movie, Catching Fire, I decided to pay homage to the popular series with a little nail art! The Hunger Games is honestly one of my favorite book series of all times. I read all three books while I was recovering from surgery last spring and it kept me engaged and distracted from the pain. I’ve heard good things about the second movie, and I love Jennifer Lawrence (such a classy lady), so I can’t wait to see it sometime soon!

The most well known symbols of the Hunger Games series are the mockingjay and fire, since Katniss is “The Girl on Fire”. On all my fingers except for my ring finger, I painted two coats of China Glaze Smoke and Ashes, a smoky black with a subtle blue and green duochrome, and is appropriately part of last year’s Capitol Colors Collection (the District 12 shade!). On my thumb, I used a toothpick and a small dotting tool to freehand Katniss’s iconic mockingjay pin using Body Central Gold. On my ring finger (which I painted with 1 coat of e.l.f. Sunflower), I created a flame inspired gradient, using Ulta Ruby Slipper (the red), OPI A Woman’s Prague-ative (the orange-y gold) and e.l.f. Sunflower (the yellow). On the rest of my nails, I used a medium sized dotting tool with Gold to create a line of dots across the sides of my black nails. I’m super happy with how this turned out! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

I’m getting so much better at freehanding things these days, I’m quite pleased with myself. I hope I get to wear this to the movies- I always take off manicures so quickly in order to blog. Guess I’ll just have to go see it tomorrow! What do you think of my Katniss Everdeen nail art tribute? Let me know in the comments!

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Fall 2013 Review And Swatches!

Hi everyone!

So yes, I know it’s Wednesday, and On Wednesdays We Wear Pink, but today, my OWWWP is going to be incorporated into my haul and review! While out running errands at Target yesterday, I FINALLY stumbled into Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear Fall 2013 Glitter collection! I have been looking for these EVERYWHERE and none of my local drugstores or beauty supply stores had them. I was actually looking for the Maybelline Brocade collection, but I could not pass these up- I was afraid they’d disappear on me again!

bottles

The fall 2013 Limited Edition glitter collection includes 10 almost indy-like glitter bombs, each with a different base color. My Target only had 6 of the 10 bottles, and since one of them was just another matte black and white glitter, I decided to pass on it. The other 5 I picked up were all the different colors of the rainbow! Formula wise, all of these polishes had a very thin clear base (with the exception of Seal-y String), and required a LARGE amount of glitter placement. The glitter density was less than I expected from looking at the bottle, but still decent. So let’s get started on the review!

Rosey Shooter is a mix of large, medium, and small magenta/red hex glitters, medium and small white hex glitters, small silver glitters, and white bar glitters. It’s got one of the better densities of the glitters I picked up, and looks fantastic over black! This is my “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink” post for the week! Pictures below are 1 coat of Rosey Shooter over 2 coats of Love and Beauty Black.

Glitter Gun is a mix of medium and small gold glitters, small silver hex glitters, large and medium white matte hex glitters, and white bar glitters. This looks like a starry sky on my nails! This is also really dense and applies well to the nail. Pictures below are 1 coat of Glitter Gun over 2 coats of Love and Beauty Black.

Green Rocket is a mix of white, medium, and small matte white hex glitters, medium and small green hex glitters, small silver hex glitters, and white bar glitters. There’s actually more white in this glitter than green, and the glitter was kinda sparse, so this one disappointed me. It’s still pretty though! Pictures below are 1 coat of Green Rocket over Ulta Fuchsiamania.

Seal-y String is the only polish that I bought that doesn’t have a clear base. It’s a sheer gray-blue base, large silver glitters, small baby blue hex glitters, tiny black glitters, and matte black bar glitter. I’ve heard other bloggers say they’ve found this polish to have large black hex glitters in it too, but I don’t think my bottle has any. How strange. This one isn’t my favorite (personal preference) but it’s still a nice polish! Pictures below are 1 coat of Seal-y String over Rue Beauté 040 (green) and e.l.f. Skinny Jeans (blue).

Frazzle Dazzle is a mix of large, medium, and small bronze hex glitters, some medium, small, and tiny silver hex glitters, and large black bar glitter. I think this one is my favorite of the polishes I picked up! I love the mix of copper and black- it looks superb over the spring green. Pictures below are 1 coat of Frazzle Dazzle over Rue Beauté 063 (brown) and Cover Girl Appletini (green).

I’m so happy I picked these up! I’m a huge glitter fan (as you all know) and these certainly do not disappoint! There are a few purple glitters in this collection that Sally Hansen released, but they weren’t at Target, but if I ever find them, I will most certainly pick them up! What do you think of this collection? Let me know in the comments!

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Polishes retail for about $2.50 a bottle, and can be found at drugstores, general stores, beauty supply stores, and on their website, here.

Diabetes Awareness Month Nail Art!

Hi everyone!

Though the arrival of November to most people means Thanksgiving and the holiday season, for many, it also signifies the start of National Diabetes awareness month. 8.3% of the population of the USA has diabetes: that’s 25.8 million people. And quite honestly, that’s 25.8 people too many. Though I myself am lucky enough to not have the disease, one of my best friends in the world, Tory, has type one diabetes, and has struggled with it since her diagnosis at age 7. Though she has every reason in the world to be bitter and depressed about her disease, she’s one of the most optimistic, positive, uplifting people I know. And today’s nail art is dedicated to her ❤

JDRF’s (Junior Diabetes Relief Fund) color to represent diabetes is blue, so I knew I had to incorporate it into the design. I decided to make a blue and white water marble on my pinky, middle, and pointer fingers using Ulta’s Snow White and Wet n’ Wild Fastdry Saved by the Blue. To create the water marble design, I alternated between the white and the blue, then drew random lines with a toothpick in the bullseye to create a random marbled look. On the pinky finger, I created a red ribbon on a black background, to represent the colors of National Diabetes Awareness Month. I used Love and Beauty Black for the background and Markwin Red for the ribbon. And finally, on the thumb, I painted a red background with Markwin Red, a black heart in Love and Beauty Black, and in Rue Beauté 009, I wrote Tory’s name over the heart, to represent her fight against diabetes. Pictures below are without topcoat!

If anyone who reads this blog is diabetic, has a family member or friend who is diabetic, or just supports the cause, please let me know in the comments below. Diabetes needs to be stopped, and I know a cure is going to be found. Also, make sure to leave some loving for Tory below, I know she’ll appreciate it 🙂 Make sure to wear blue for diabetes this month! I know I will be.

MOTD: Born Pretty Store Holo Polish #12

Hi everyone!

I’m sooooo sorry for being absent for the past few days. This week has been absolutely insane with schoolwork and extracurriculars (the life of a high school student, I know!). I’ve also been working on something extra special which you’ll get to see hopefully later on this week! My posting schedule might be sporadic for the rest of the week, but I promise that by next Monday, everything should even out to usual.

I got a lovely surprise in the mail yesterday when I got home from a particularly grueling day at school: my package from the Born Pretty Store had arrived! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Born Pretty Store, it’s an online e-tailer of makeup and nail art products for discount prices, and the quality is actually quite superb for the price! I believe the store is based in Singapore, since all of the packaging I got was postmarked from there, but don’t quote me on that. What I can say for sure is that Born Pretty Store offers FREE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING on ALL ORDERS. Did you hear that? No, I promise, I’m not lying. FREE SHIPPING! What more could you ask?

While my order had lots and lots of nail art items, today I have with you my favorite of all my purchases to show you. I had been craving some of the holographic polishes Born Pretty offers on their website for the longest time, and when my paycheck came around, I knew exactly what I was going to spend it on. In the end, I picked holo #12, a deep, deep blackened teal holo. I can’t speak for all of Born Pretty’s holographic polishes, but this one is a stunner! The linear holographic effect is intense when the right light hits it, and the dark teal is unlike any other color I own. I’ve had the color on for 2 days now without any chipping, so it’s pretty durable as well (I’m wearing it with Zoya Anchor base coat, and no topcoat). I’m very pleased with my first Born Pretty purchase! Pictures below are 3 coats of #12, no topcoat.

Neither of these pictures show the true intensity of the holo, but they’re both pretty true to the teal color. What do you think of holographic polishes? And have you ever tried anything from the Born Pretty Store? Let me know in the comments!

Born Pretty Holo polishes retail for $12.88 a bottle, but are currently on sale for 57% off at $5.49 a bottle (a real steal for holo polishes) and is available online at the Born Pretty Store website, here.

Happy Halloween From The Polish Influenza!!

Hi everyone!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Hope everyone is having a spooktacular day! We got to wear parts of our costumes to school today (pictures at the end of the post) and there were some pretty creative ones! Of course, to celebrate the day, I did my nails up all special. I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Sun Kissed for the orange, Love and Beauty Black for my ring finger and thumb, Ulta Little Black Dress for the writing, Sinful  Colors’ Snow Me White for the ghosts, and Rue 21 Glow in the Dark over the ghosts for a boo-tiful glow! Pics are without topcoat!

I tried to get a shot with the glowing ghosts for you guys, except, this is what happened…

S11fydoQhY5gQGBkfcrSaTWq4Ref6NJcC4w3uX9tCkA-1

I considered water marking this, just for the lols, but opted against it. Too much work!

And of course, I can’t leave without showing you my Halloween costume! While I didn’t go trick or treating (I’m a little too old for that now- I just take candy from our own candy bowl!) I still wanted to get all dressed up. You’re never too old for that! I saw an amazing makeup tutorial to transform yourself into a doe from a makeup guru called From Head to Toe. She’s got some great wearable makeup too. I followed her instructions, stuck on a pair of antlers, and voila! I have become a deer! Here’s a pic.

Doe-n't I look cute? (Deer pun lol)

Doe-n’t I look cute? (Deer pun lol)

So that’s it for me today. I hope you all had a great day full of tricks and treats! Stay boo-tiful!

Review- Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots Collection!

Hi everyone!

collection1

How are all of you today? I’m so ready for the weekend, my birthday is Saturday and I’m ready to celebrate! Just tomorrow left, and then I’m free! What are you guys planning to do this Columbus Day Weekend?

I’ve been dying to try the Maybelline Color Show Polka Dot collection for the longest time now! It was launched in July 2013, so I realize I’m a little late on the jump, but better late than never! I picked up two of the bottles recently and decided it was time to try them out! The colors I got definitely spoke more fall to me, so in my opinion, I’m more fond of wearing them now than earlier in the year.

maybelline-Color-Show-Polka-Dots-Collections

Left to right: Drops of Jade, Dotty, Clearly Spotted, Pretty in Polka, Blue Marks the Spot

The Polka Collection polishes are semi-sheer colored bases with black and white matte glitter mixed throughout. The black and white glitter trend is SOOO popular right now! China Glaze included one in their Cirque du Soleil collection this summer (the shade was called Whirled Away), Hard Candy has one, and dozens and dozens of indies (my favorite being Puttin’ on the Ritz by Dollish Polish). Maybelline originally released this collection in the UK, and then they migrated over here a few months later, with re-vamped names and color selection. The polishes themselves are on the thick side, and kind of hard to apply due to the glitter density. And if you’re impatient at removing glitter nail polish, save yourself the trouble and DO NOT use these. They are nearly impossible to get off, the glitter is so stubborn. But if you love the look of black and white hex glitters in multiple sizes, then this collection is for you! There are 5 colors to pick from (listed above), and I have the green and the blue to show for you. None of the pictures have topcoat. Let’s get started!

Drops of Jade is a dark seafoam green jam-packed with matte black and white hex glitters. Many bloggers have said that this is the most opaque color in the collection, and I agree completely! It gave pretty solid coverage in about 2 coats, and wasn’t all that streaky (the glitter covers up any problem spots). I used 2 coats for the pictures below!

Shade

Shade

Blue Marks the Spot is a bit of a dud for me. In the bottle, it looks like a gorgeous, somewhat greyed-out blue. But on the nails? It’s almost too sheer to identify as a blue. It took 3 coats to even be able to see the blue, and it still wasn’t opaque- it was super patchy :/ It was also a lot thinner than Drops of Jade. I used three coats for the photos below.

Shade

Shade

To amend the blue situation, I decided to use it as a topper. I first painted my nails 1 coat of e.l.f. Skinny Jeans, and then painted on 1 coat of Blue Marks the Spot. I like the way it looks, but I’m still disappointed, since the collection already features a clear glitter topper, so the other polishes are meant to be worn on their own. Oh well, at least I salvaged this one.

Shade

Shade

Overall, I’m intrigued by the collection. Blue Marks the Spot really let me down, but Drops of Jade promises so much. I really want to try the magenta, Pretty in Polka, as well as the orange, Dotty, especially since the orange shares the name of my dog! What do you think of the collection? Are you a fan of the black and white glitter trend?

Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots polishes are available for $2.99 a bottle, and can be found at drugstores, beauty supply stores, and on their website, here.

OPI Gwen Stefani Winter 2014 Collection!

Hi everyone!

Big news! Gwen Stefani and Suzi Weiss-Fischmann of OPI have teamed up to make a dynamic collaboration collection to be released this coming January! This collection features 5 polishes inspired by Gwen Stefani in what OPI is calling “Breakthrough Finishes” Two of the polishes will be a “satin” finish (which I believe will be something like half-matte with some sheen left to it), two will be “creme glosses” (maybe similar to their “sorbet-like finish” of the Texas Collection coral color Guy Meets Galveston?) and the last will be a sparkly glitter topper. There will also be a 6th color, which has been named (it’s called Push and Shove) but the color has yet to be released. Executive VP of OPI Suzi Weiss-Fischmann describes the collection as follows:

OPI wanted to create a collection as dramatic, diverse and glamorous as its namesake. With crème and glitter hues, new satin matte texture, a mirrored chrome and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, Gwen Stefani by OPI presents the latest in pigments and finishes, while combining elements of haute couture and street fashion.”

Here are some press photos below!

Pictures are from http://www.everything2k.com/

Gwen Stefani By OPI Color

Screen shot 2013-10-07 at 6.07.29 PM

In addition to these amazing shades, OPI will also be releasing a signature Gwen Stefani LE red, called Over & Over A-Gwen, which will be packaged and sold similarly to the gold leaf topcoats that have been released for the James Bond Winter 2012 and the Mariah Carey Winter 2013 holiday collection. The box will include the limited edition polish, and nail studs and gems to punk-ify your manicure just like Gwen Stefani herself!

There will also be a special base coat released with the special colors Over & Over A-Gwen and Push and Shove, called Lay Down That Base. While OPI has not specifically stated what the purpose of this is, I’m interested in seeing how this base coat varies from their standard fare.

So what do you think of this upcoming collection? Are you excited to try out these new colors? I’m super intrigued about the glitter In True Stefani Fashion, but then again, I’m a HUGE glitter fan! This collection is currently scheduled to be released to the public in January of 2014, so stay tuned for more details!

31DC2013 Day 30- Inspired by a Tutorial (rubikscube907)

Hi everyone!

This is it, folks. One day left of the 31DC2013 after today’s post! It has been a wild ride, and I’m glad I got to spend it with all of my amazing viewers! You all make me so happy, seeing your views and comments, and it’s really exciting watching my stat map to see what countries everyone is from. Shout out to my first viewer from Japan a few days ago! I hope you all enjoy reading this blog as much as I love writing it 🙂

Today’s nails are inspired by the lovely youtuber rubikscube907. She does great nail art tutorials, Outfits of the Day, and much more, but this one particular tutorial caught my eye. It’s social media nails! What a more appropriate way to spread the love for rubikscube907 than through social media, eh? Here’s a screen grab of her design!

rubikscube907's nails

rubikscube907’s nails

And here’s the video!

To create the design, I pretty much just freehanded everything with toothpicks, so it’s not worth explaining every nail (besides, if you want to see a visual tutorial, rubikscube907 has that for you!), but here are the colors I used on each nail:

Youtube: Sinful Colors Snow Me White, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot (red), Love and Beauty Black

Twitter: Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue me Away (light blue), e.l.f. Skinny Jeans (dark blue), Snow Me White

Instagram: Rue Beauté 004 (light brown), Rue Beauté 063 (dark brown), Black, Snow Me White, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, Smokin’ Hot, Skinny Jeans, Rue Beauté 040 (green)

Facebook: Skinny Jeans, Snow Me White, e.l.f. Lavender Mist

Tumblr: Essence Movie Star, Lavender Mist, Snow Me White

I hope you like my interpretation of the design! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

If you like this design, please share it on social media! (I know, I know, cheesy). And make sure to let me know which of my nails you like the best! And also, make sure to check out rubikscube907 on youtube, she deserves your attention!

The end approacheth! Tomorrow is the final day! Honor nails you ❤ is the theme, which nails will I recreate? Only time will tell!

31DC2013 Day 28- Inspired by a Flag(s)

Hi everyone!

So, I’m using today’s 31DC2013 theme as an announcement. I’m going to be going on my very first trip to Europe this summer! I’m taking a cruise, so I’m going to have the opportunity to see multiple countries. And today, my nails are representing the countries I’ll be visiting. So, without further ado….

flag3

I’m going to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Latvia, and Estonia!! If you live in or are from any of these countries, let me know in the comments! You don’t know how excited I am to see these countries. The Baltic area has always fascinated me, and I can’t wait to experience the sites, sounds, and culture these countries have to offer! And of course, I’d love to see the best nail polish brands from abroad, too 🙂

To create today’s design, I used the tape manicure technique. I started with a base of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow on my thumb, Rue Beauté 043 on my pointer finger, e.l.f. Skinny Jeans on my middle finger, Sinful Colors Snow Me White on my ring finger, and Love and Beauty Black on my pinky. I made tape crosses on my thumb and pointer finger, and a strip of tape down the middle of my middle finger, ring finger, and pinky. I painted Skinny Jeans over my thumb, Snow Me White over my pointer finger, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot on the tip of my middle finger and Snow Me White on the base, Smokin’ Hot on my ring finger, and Skinny Jeans on the base of my pinky, and Snow Me White on the tip. I peeled off the tape, and ta da! Lots of flags, in the order of my itinerary! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

I hope you guys like them! And to my viewers from these 5 countries, what are the best local nail polish brands, and where can I find them when I’m on my vacation? I’d love to be able to pick up some foreign lacquers as souvenirs!

We’re winding down on the 31DC2013, folks! It’s been one crazy ride, no? Tomorrow is a supernatural inspired design. Oooh, ghosts and monsters and witches! Can’t wait!

31DC2013 Day 27- Inspired by Artwork (The Scream)

Hi all!

I’m going to admit, today was a struggle. I’m really no artist, I just happen to be good with nail polish. I swear, when I pick up a paintbrush or colored pencil and try to do this stuff in real life, the end result is horrific. I don’t know why it always works on my nails, lol! So having to put a real life work of art on my nails was kinda terrifying! In the end, I’m pleased with the result, and I hope you agree with me!

Much-The_Scream

My inspiration for today’s design came from the painting The Scream by Edvard Munch. It’s very surreal, which I love because of its abstract nature. I immediately knew that I wanted to emulate the swirls of the paint through water marble, and I separated the color patterns into three parts: the oranges, yellows, and reds of the sky, the blues of the water, and the browns of the bridge. I started by painting all of my nails white (Sinful Colors Snow Me White) to get the best and boldest water marble.

To get the sun-lit sky, I put drops of Essie Tart Deco, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow and Sally Hansen Sun Kissed into a bowl of lukewarm tap water. I used a toothpick to draw random, linear patterns, and dipped my thumb and middle finger into the mix. To get the water, I put drops of Rue Beauté 043, Rue Beauté 033, e.l.f. Lavender Mist, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, and Sinful Colors Snow Me White into a bowl, created the same linear pattern, and dipped my pointer and ring fingers into the mix. For the bridge, I mixed Rue Beauté 004 and Rue Beauté 063 in the same linear pattern, and just dipped in my pinky.

For the scream himself, I mixed together Snow Me White, 004, and Love and Beauty Black on a palette, and freehanded the shape of his face on my ring finger. Once that dried, I used a mix of black and the navy 043 to freehand the mouth and eyes. I then used the grey mixture to draw on his hands next to his face. And ta da! Art on my fingers! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

So there’s my version of art. Please share if you like it! It means a lot to me! And I really want to see all of your amazing nail art designs as well, so make sure to share them!

Tomorrow is flag inspired day. I already have my design planned and ready to go! Come back tomorrow to see what I have in store!
