Green and Brown Water Marble!

Hi folks!

THE POLISH INFLUENZA IS MOVING. CLICK HERE TO BE REDIRECTED.

I hope that all of my US readers had a fantastic Thanksgiving, and that all of my Jewish readers are having a fantastic Hannukah! The holiday season is all about bringing family and friends together in celebration, and it was wonderful seeing my extended family last night. I’m so thankful for all of the wonderful people I have in my life, and I’m most certainly thankful for the support I’ve gotten since starting The Polish Influenza. You all are amazing, and I can’t thank you enough for the amazing feedback I’ve gotten. I hope you’ll continue to enjoy my nail reviews and designs through the holiday season and into the new year!

For Thanksgiving weekend, I wanted to do a water marble in order to bring some festivity to my hands. I recently picked up Essie’s Shake Your $$ Maker, a bright green, from Walgreens for $4 (a bargain for Essie, I know), so I knew I wanted to incorporate it into the design. I thought that a dark, coffee brown would go well with the green, so I settled on Rue Beauté 063. Unfortunately, I soon found out that Shake Your $$ Maker would not spread in the water. I still wanted to use it, though, so I devised a plan.

I painted my nails with a base of Ulta’s Snow White, and then painted two coats of Shake Your $$ Maker overtop. Once that dried, I marbled 063 and OPI Topcoat in the water, so that the clear part of the marble would show the green. It worked wonderfully, and I’m super happy with the result! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat sealing the design.

I am so happy with this design, I especially love the green! What do you think of the design? And what are you doing this holiday weekend? Taking advantage of any of the nail polish Black Friday sales (Zoya has some AMAZING deals on their website!)? Let me know in the comments below!

31DC2013 Day 30- Inspired by a Tutorial (rubikscube907)

Hi everyone!

This is it, folks. One day left of the 31DC2013 after today’s post! It has been a wild ride, and I’m glad I got to spend it with all of my amazing viewers! You all make me so happy, seeing your views and comments, and it’s really exciting watching my stat map to see what countries everyone is from. Shout out to my first viewer from Japan a few days ago! I hope you all enjoy reading this blog as much as I love writing it 🙂

Today’s nails are inspired by the lovely youtuber rubikscube907. She does great nail art tutorials, Outfits of the Day, and much more, but this one particular tutorial caught my eye. It’s social media nails! What a more appropriate way to spread the love for rubikscube907 than through social media, eh? Here’s a screen grab of her design!

rubikscube907's nails

And here’s the video!

To create the design, I pretty much just freehanded everything with toothpicks, so it’s not worth explaining every nail (besides, if you want to see a visual tutorial, rubikscube907 has that for you!), but here are the colors I used on each nail:

Youtube: Sinful Colors Snow Me White, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot (red), Love and Beauty Black

Twitter: Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue me Away (light blue), e.l.f. Skinny Jeans (dark blue), Snow Me White

Instagram: Rue Beauté 004 (light brown), Rue Beauté 063 (dark brown), Black, Snow Me White, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, Smokin’ Hot, Skinny Jeans, Rue Beauté 040 (green)

Facebook: Skinny Jeans, Snow Me White, e.l.f. Lavender Mist

Tumblr: Essence Movie Star, Lavender Mist, Snow Me White

I hope you like my interpretation of the design! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

If you like this design, please share it on social media! (I know, I know, cheesy). And make sure to let me know which of my nails you like the best! And also, make sure to check out rubikscube907 on youtube, she deserves your attention!

The end approacheth! Tomorrow is the final day! Honor nails you ❤ is the theme, which nails will I recreate? Only time will tell!

31DC2013 Day 27- Inspired by Artwork (The Scream)

Hi all!

I’m going to admit, today was a struggle. I’m really no artist, I just happen to be good with nail polish. I swear, when I pick up a paintbrush or colored pencil and try to do this stuff in real life, the end result is horrific. I don’t know why it always works on my nails, lol! So having to put a real life work of art on my nails was kinda terrifying! In the end, I’m pleased with the result, and I hope you agree with me!

Much-The_Scream

My inspiration for today’s design came from the painting The Scream by Edvard Munch. It’s very surreal, which I love because of its abstract nature. I immediately knew that I wanted to emulate the swirls of the paint through water marble, and I separated the color patterns into three parts: the oranges, yellows, and reds of the sky, the blues of the water, and the browns of the bridge. I started by painting all of my nails white (Sinful Colors Snow Me White) to get the best and boldest water marble.

To get the sun-lit sky, I put drops of Essie Tart Deco, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow and Sally Hansen Sun Kissed into a bowl of lukewarm tap water. I used a toothpick to draw random, linear patterns, and dipped my thumb and middle finger into the mix. To get the water, I put drops of Rue Beauté 043, Rue Beauté 033, e.l.f. Lavender Mist, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, and Sinful Colors Snow Me White into a bowl, created the same linear pattern, and dipped my pointer and ring fingers into the mix. For the bridge, I mixed Rue Beauté 004 and Rue Beauté 063 in the same linear pattern, and just dipped in my pinky.

For the scream himself, I mixed together Snow Me White, 004, and Love and Beauty Black on a palette, and freehanded the shape of his face on my ring finger. Once that dried, I used a mix of black and the navy 043 to freehand the mouth and eyes. I then used the grey mixture to draw on his hands next to his face. And ta da! Art on my fingers! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

So there’s my version of art. Please share if you like it! It means a lot to me! And I really want to see all of your amazing nail art designs as well, so make sure to share them!

Tomorrow is flag inspired day. I already have my design planned and ready to go! Come back tomorrow to see what I have in store!

31DC2013 Day 22- Inspired by a Song! (Bastille- Pompeii)

Hi everyone!

I’m really excited for this look because the song I’ve chosen to be inspired by is probably one of my favorites of all time! I love the group Bastille, and their new album, Bad Blood, has been my obsession since its release. The best song off the album, in my opinion, is Pompeii, a gorgeous song featuring strong vocals. I love to wake up to this in the morning because it just makes my day better! The music video is amazing, check it out here!

I took my inspiration for my nails today from scenes from the music video. The design was done completely freehand with toothpicks, so I’m not going to explain how I drew each design. However, I will include screen grabs to show which scene from the video each nail was inspired by!

31DC2013 Day 20- Water Marbled Nails!

Hi ladies!

¡Hola chicas!

I cannot believe it’s already day 20 of this challenge! I haven’t missed a day yet! I hope you guys are enjoying my designs so far, because I’m having so much fun making them! Your support has certainly been amazing!

¡No creo que ya sea día 20 de este desafío! ¡Todavía no me he saltado un día! Espero que todas las personas les encanten mis diseños, porque me gusta mucho hacerlos. Su apoyo me ayuda mucho 🙂

Since fall officially begins tomorrow (YAY sweater weather!) I felt inspired to use fall colors in my design. I started with a base of, what else, 1 coat of Sinful Colors Snow Me White. After that dried, I gathered my colors for the design. The colors I chose are as follows:

Si otoño empieza mañana, quiero usar colores del otoño en mi diseño. Empecé con una basa de Sinful Colors Snow Me White. Después, conseguí mis colores por el diseño. Los colores que elegí son:

OPI I Knead Sour Dough  (burnt burgundy-pink) (café-rosa)

Fresh Paints Dragon Lady (sparkly green) (verde con brillos)

Essie Tart Deco (hot coral) (coral brillante)

Rue Beauté 004 (dark brown) (marrón oscuro)

I tried a new water marble technique today. Instead of drawing lines in the polish when it was on the water, I swirled the polish. I really like how it turned out! The color combination really reminds me of an autumn pumpkin! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

I love how my design turned out today! Water marble really isn’t a challenge for me, I do it really often, so I wanted to try the new technique to make it something new. I hope you like it!

Me gusta mucho este diseño hoy. Water marble no es un desafío para mi, porque me gusta hacerlo muchas veces. Pues, quería probar la técnica nueva para crear algo nuevo. ¡Espero que les guste!

If you love this look, make sure to share it on social media! I always appreciate your support 🙂

Si le gusta este look, por favor, compártalo en Facebook, Twitter, y otras redes sociales. Me gusta su apoyo 🙂

Tomorrow starts the “inspired by…” part of the challenge. Come visit tomorrow to see what I come up with!

Mañana empieza los “inspired by…” parte del desafío. ¡Visíteme mañana para ver que diseño!

31DC2013 Day 10- Gradient Nails!

Hi everyone!

So we’re now entering the “patterns” phase of the 31 day challenge! The colors are officially complete! WOO! I’m done the first section, and I didn’t miss a day so far! Be so very proud of me 🙂 I’ll continue to do my best to keep up with the challenge! Hope you’re enjoying it so far!

Today, for gradient nails day, I knew I really wanted to do a muted color palette, since yesterday was an in-you-face political rainbow. And since fall weather is in the air, I thought some gorgeous browns would be perfect for the job! I started out with a light, creamy tan-brown, Rue Beauté 004. The middle color was from the old Wet n’ Wild Craze line, called Rustic. The darkest, rich chocolatey brown color was also a Rue Beauté polish, 063. I sponged all three polishes onto my base of 004 (two times, to ensure opacity) and voila! Beautiful, rustic gradient nails! If you want a more detailed explanation to how I created this gradient manicure, visit my other post on the topic, here. Pictures below are with LA Color Rapid Dry topcoat.

Sorry for the messy-ish cuticles. I have torn several of them, and acetone currently burns, so I’m trying to give them a bit of a break.

Once again, please share my design on social media if you like it, and feel free to share your designs with me!

Tomorrow is polka dots- I definitely want to do something super cute and creative! Check in tomorrow to see what I come up with!

31DC2013 Day 5- Blue Nails!

Hi everyone!

Sorry my post is kinda late today, I had school, club meetings, and then work to go to, and on top of all that, I’m catching an end-of-summer cold 😦 I still had to make time for nail polish, though, because, well, I’m not going to let this challenge get the best of me; I’m already 16% of the way done!

Today is BLUE DAY WOOOOOO! Blue is probably my favorite color EVAH. Ignoring my obsession with all things glitter, blue nail polish is my favorite color to wear. There are SOOO many directions you could take blue nails. I decided to go with what I believe is a classic staple of American blue- the good ol’ blue jeans.

I started out with a gorgeous grey blue polish by Essence from their Colour & Go line, called Movie Star. It’s pretty opaque, but a little patchy, so two coats are key to smooth things out. I wanted to amp up my denim design, so I decided to add a gorgeous glitter to the top of Movie Star. Glitter of choice? Ulta Salon Formula nail lacquer in Indigo-go Girl. It’s a fabulous denim blue glitter- packed with tiny silver glitters, tiny denim blue glitters, and larger blue hex glitters. The base is slightly tinted blue by the glitter, but it’s (for the most part) clear. One coat of that added the sparkle that the look needed. I then used a light brown polish (Rue Beauté 004) to draw a line across the top of each nail  to make the belt. I put a gold rectangle in the center of each “belt” to represent the belt buckle (I used a Body Central brand gold metallic polish- it doesn’t have a name, unfortunately), and then used Love and Beauty Black to draw in the pockets and zipper with a toothpick. I love the results- it looks like my nails are wearing jeans! Pictures below are with no topcoat.

I’m really proud of this design- I love the way it turned out! I hope you guys did too!

I’m really having a blast with this challenge. It’s so much fun both to create my own designs, as well as see everyone else’s amazing nail art skills. Please keep sharing your designs, it means the world to me to see your creations! Also, please share my designs, the publicity is great for me, and I’m happy to check out your blog in return!

Tomorrow is purple day, so many possibilities!
