Hunger Games Nail Art!

Hello tributes!

Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor! In honor of tonight’s release of the new Hunger Games trilogy movie, Catching Fire, I decided to pay homage to the popular series with a little nail art! The Hunger Games is honestly one of my favorite book series of all times. I read all three books while I was recovering from surgery last spring and it kept me engaged and distracted from the pain. I’ve heard good things about the second movie, and I love Jennifer Lawrence (such a classy lady), so I can’t wait to see it sometime soon!

The most well known symbols of the Hunger Games series are the mockingjay and fire, since Katniss is “The Girl on Fire”. On all my fingers except for my ring finger, I painted two coats of China Glaze Smoke and Ashes, a smoky black with a subtle blue and green duochrome, and is appropriately part of last year’s Capitol Colors Collection (the District 12 shade!). On my thumb, I used a toothpick and a small dotting tool to freehand Katniss’s iconic mockingjay pin using Body Central Gold. On my ring finger (which I painted with 1 coat of e.l.f. Sunflower), I created a flame inspired gradient, using Ulta Ruby Slipper (the red), OPI A Woman’s Prague-ative (the orange-y gold) and e.l.f. Sunflower (the yellow). On the rest of my nails, I used a medium sized dotting tool with Gold to create a line of dots across the sides of my black nails. I’m super happy with how this turned out! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

I’m getting so much better at freehanding things these days, I’m quite pleased with myself. I hope I get to wear this to the movies- I always take off manicures so quickly in order to blog. Guess I’ll just have to go see it tomorrow! What do you think of my Katniss Everdeen nail art tribute? Let me know in the comments!

Review- Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots Collection!

Hi everyone!

collection1

How are all of you today? I’m so ready for the weekend, my birthday is Saturday and I’m ready to celebrate! Just tomorrow left, and then I’m free! What are you guys planning to do this Columbus Day Weekend?

I’ve been dying to try the Maybelline Color Show Polka Dot collection for the longest time now! It was launched in July 2013, so I realize I’m a little late on the jump, but better late than never! I picked up two of the bottles recently and decided it was time to try them out! The colors I got definitely spoke more fall to me, so in my opinion, I’m more fond of wearing them now than earlier in the year.

maybelline-Color-Show-Polka-Dots-Collections

Left to right: Drops of Jade, Dotty, Clearly Spotted, Pretty in Polka, Blue Marks the Spot

The Polka Collection polishes are semi-sheer colored bases with black and white matte glitter mixed throughout. The black and white glitter trend is SOOO popular right now! China Glaze included one in their Cirque du Soleil collection this summer (the shade was called Whirled Away), Hard Candy has one, and dozens and dozens of indies (my favorite being Puttin’ on the Ritz by Dollish Polish). Maybelline originally released this collection in the UK, and then they migrated over here a few months later, with re-vamped names and color selection. The polishes themselves are on the thick side, and kind of hard to apply due to the glitter density. And if you’re impatient at removing glitter nail polish, save yourself the trouble and DO NOT use these. They are nearly impossible to get off, the glitter is so stubborn. But if you love the look of black and white hex glitters in multiple sizes, then this collection is for you! There are 5 colors to pick from (listed above), and I have the green and the blue to show for you. None of the pictures have topcoat. Let’s get started!

Drops of Jade is a dark seafoam green jam-packed with matte black and white hex glitters. Many bloggers have said that this is the most opaque color in the collection, and I agree completely! It gave pretty solid coverage in about 2 coats, and wasn’t all that streaky (the glitter covers up any problem spots). I used 2 coats for the pictures below!

Shade

Shade

Blue Marks the Spot is a bit of a dud for me. In the bottle, it looks like a gorgeous, somewhat greyed-out blue. But on the nails? It’s almost too sheer to identify as a blue. It took 3 coats to even be able to see the blue, and it still wasn’t opaque- it was super patchy :/ It was also a lot thinner than Drops of Jade. I used three coats for the photos below.

Shade

Shade

To amend the blue situation, I decided to use it as a topper. I first painted my nails 1 coat of e.l.f. Skinny Jeans, and then painted on 1 coat of Blue Marks the Spot. I like the way it looks, but I’m still disappointed, since the collection already features a clear glitter topper, so the other polishes are meant to be worn on their own. Oh well, at least I salvaged this one.

Shade

Shade

Overall, I’m intrigued by the collection. Blue Marks the Spot really let me down, but Drops of Jade promises so much. I really want to try the magenta, Pretty in Polka, as well as the orange, Dotty, especially since the orange shares the name of my dog! What do you think of the collection? Are you a fan of the black and white glitter trend?

Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots polishes are available for $2.99 a bottle, and can be found at drugstores, beauty supply stores, and on their website, here.

31DC2013 Day 30- Inspired by a Tutorial (rubikscube907)

Hi everyone!

This is it, folks. One day left of the 31DC2013 after today’s post! It has been a wild ride, and I’m glad I got to spend it with all of my amazing viewers! You all make me so happy, seeing your views and comments, and it’s really exciting watching my stat map to see what countries everyone is from. Shout out to my first viewer from Japan a few days ago! I hope you all enjoy reading this blog as much as I love writing it 🙂

Today’s nails are inspired by the lovely youtuber rubikscube907. She does great nail art tutorials, Outfits of the Day, and much more, but this one particular tutorial caught my eye. It’s social media nails! What a more appropriate way to spread the love for rubikscube907 than through social media, eh? Here’s a screen grab of her design!

rubikscube907's nails

rubikscube907’s nails

And here’s the video!

To create the design, I pretty much just freehanded everything with toothpicks, so it’s not worth explaining every nail (besides, if you want to see a visual tutorial, rubikscube907 has that for you!), but here are the colors I used on each nail:

Youtube: Sinful Colors Snow Me White, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot (red), Love and Beauty Black

Twitter: Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue me Away (light blue), e.l.f. Skinny Jeans (dark blue), Snow Me White

Instagram: Rue Beauté 004 (light brown), Rue Beauté 063 (dark brown), Black, Snow Me White, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, Smokin’ Hot, Skinny Jeans, Rue Beauté 040 (green)

Facebook: Skinny Jeans, Snow Me White, e.l.f. Lavender Mist

Tumblr: Essence Movie Star, Lavender Mist, Snow Me White

I hope you like my interpretation of the design! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

If you like this design, please share it on social media! (I know, I know, cheesy). And make sure to let me know which of my nails you like the best! And also, make sure to check out rubikscube907 on youtube, she deserves your attention!

The end approacheth! Tomorrow is the final day! Honor nails you ❤ is the theme, which nails will I recreate? Only time will tell!

31DC2013 Day 29- Inspired by the Supernatural

Hi everyone!

Today’s prompt, the supernatural, was a bit difficult for me. I’m not into scary things (I’m such a crybaby at horror movies, it’s ridiculous) and dragons and phoenixes are too difficult to paint in miniature. I then thought of ghosts, but that seemed far too clichéd. And then it hit me: what if I went tongue-in-cheek, and did Pacman ghosts. And so it went.

To create my classic arcade-inspired nails, I started off by painting all of my nails with two coats of Love and Beauty Black. I then took Sinful Colors Snow Me White and drew the outlines of Pacman with his dots on my thumb and the 4 ghosts, Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Sue, on my other fingers. I filled in the designs with white to make sure that the colors would stand out against the black. Once that had dried, I filled in Pacman and the dots with Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, Inky with a mix of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away and Mint Sorbet, Pinky with a mix of Love and Beauty Pink Creme and Snow Me White, Blinky with e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot, and Sue with Mellow Yellow and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Sun Kissed. Once those colors dried, I put little white dots on the ghosts for eyes, and put a black dot inside of them. And Pacman has come to life on my nails! Pictures below are without topcoat.

So it’s not quite spooky or scary, but it sure is cute! ^__^ Sue is a little cross-eyed, but hey, she was always the odd one out xD Let me know if you like Pacman too in the comments below!

Only TWO DAYS LEFT of the 31DC2013!!! I can’t believe how fast time flies! I hope you all have enjoyed it as much as I have 🙂 Tomorrow is “inspired by a tutorial”, so if you have a favorite tutorial, make sure to let me know in the comments! I always need inspiration!

31DC2013 Day 28- Inspired by a Flag(s)

Hi everyone!

So, I’m using today’s 31DC2013 theme as an announcement. I’m going to be going on my very first trip to Europe this summer! I’m taking a cruise, so I’m going to have the opportunity to see multiple countries. And today, my nails are representing the countries I’ll be visiting. So, without further ado….

flag3

I’m going to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Latvia, and Estonia!! If you live in or are from any of these countries, let me know in the comments! You don’t know how excited I am to see these countries. The Baltic area has always fascinated me, and I can’t wait to experience the sites, sounds, and culture these countries have to offer! And of course, I’d love to see the best nail polish brands from abroad, too 🙂

To create today’s design, I used the tape manicure technique. I started with a base of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow on my thumb, Rue Beauté 043 on my pointer finger, e.l.f. Skinny Jeans on my middle finger, Sinful Colors Snow Me White on my ring finger, and Love and Beauty Black on my pinky. I made tape crosses on my thumb and pointer finger, and a strip of tape down the middle of my middle finger, ring finger, and pinky. I painted Skinny Jeans over my thumb, Snow Me White over my pointer finger, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot on the tip of my middle finger and Snow Me White on the base, Smokin’ Hot on my ring finger, and Skinny Jeans on the base of my pinky, and Snow Me White on the tip. I peeled off the tape, and ta da! Lots of flags, in the order of my itinerary! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

I hope you guys like them! And to my viewers from these 5 countries, what are the best local nail polish brands, and where can I find them when I’m on my vacation? I’d love to be able to pick up some foreign lacquers as souvenirs!

We’re winding down on the 31DC2013, folks! It’s been one crazy ride, no? Tomorrow is a supernatural inspired design. Oooh, ghosts and monsters and witches! Can’t wait!

31DC2013 Day 27- Inspired by Artwork (The Scream)

Hi all!

I’m going to admit, today was a struggle. I’m really no artist, I just happen to be good with nail polish. I swear, when I pick up a paintbrush or colored pencil and try to do this stuff in real life, the end result is horrific. I don’t know why it always works on my nails, lol! So having to put a real life work of art on my nails was kinda terrifying! In the end, I’m pleased with the result, and I hope you agree with me!

Much-The_Scream

My inspiration for today’s design came from the painting The Scream by Edvard Munch. It’s very surreal, which I love because of its abstract nature. I immediately knew that I wanted to emulate the swirls of the paint through water marble, and I separated the color patterns into three parts: the oranges, yellows, and reds of the sky, the blues of the water, and the browns of the bridge. I started by painting all of my nails white (Sinful Colors Snow Me White) to get the best and boldest water marble.

To get the sun-lit sky, I put drops of Essie Tart Deco, e.l.f. Smokin’ Hot, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow and Sally Hansen Sun Kissed into a bowl of lukewarm tap water. I used a toothpick to draw random, linear patterns, and dipped my thumb and middle finger into the mix. To get the water, I put drops of Rue Beauté 043, Rue Beauté 033, e.l.f. Lavender Mist, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow, and Sinful Colors Snow Me White into a bowl, created the same linear pattern, and dipped my pointer and ring fingers into the mix. For the bridge, I mixed Rue Beauté 004 and Rue Beauté 063 in the same linear pattern, and just dipped in my pinky.

For the scream himself, I mixed together Snow Me White, 004, and Love and Beauty Black on a palette, and freehanded the shape of his face on my ring finger. Once that dried, I used a mix of black and the navy 043 to freehand the mouth and eyes. I then used the grey mixture to draw on his hands next to his face. And ta da! Art on my fingers! Pictures below are with OPI topcoat.

So there’s my version of art. Please share if you like it! It means a lot to me! And I really want to see all of your amazing nail art designs as well, so make sure to share them!

31DC2013 Day 24- Inspired by a Book (The Rainbow Fish)

Hi folks!

Quick post for today because my schedule is crazy busy! I barely had time to do my nails! But I fit it in! All while watching the America’s Cup (GO TEAM ORACLE! If you’re not watching, you’d better tune in tomorrow, it’s going to be an exciting race of sailing!). Maybe that’s why my manicure is nautical themed today…

The book I’ve selected as my inspiration is The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. It’s a classic children’s book written to display the joys of sharing with others. Just like I’m doing with my manicure today- sharing it with you!

71tgWvlkodL._SL1023_

I started of with two coats of e.l.f. Skinny Jeans on my pointer finger, middle finger, and pinky, and two coats of e.l.f. Lavender Mist on my thumb and ring finger. On my two accent nails, I used Love and Beauty Black on a toothpick to draw the outlines of fish scales. On the other three nails, I took a makeup sponge torn into little chunks and dabbed on Lavender Mist and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away in small patches to create depth to the ocean. I finished off those nails with Sinful Colors Snow Me White circles to represent bubbles (as seen on the cover of the book).

To finish off the scale nails, I took Rue Beauté 040, Love and Beauty Red, Lavender Mist, Skinny Jeans, and Sinful Colors Dream On and put drops of each color on a paper plate (which I use as a palette). I mixed a drop of Ulta Glass Slipper (a glass shard topcoat shown here) to each color to give them shimmery effects. I then randomly placed the colors inside the drawn scales. On one scale per nail, I used Sephora by OPI Bring on the Snowflakes to serve as the Rainbow Fish’s iconic silver scale. I sealed in the design with Ulta Color-Enhancing topcoat and my fishy design was finished! Pictures are below!

I hope you guys love this design! Maybe it’ll spark some childhood nostalgia like it did for me!

31DC2013 Day 23- Inspired by a Movie (Monsters Inc.)

Hi ladies!

Today I have a design inspired by one of my all time favorite movies: MONSTERS INC. I absolutely loved the movie as a child, and I still do today! Mike and Sully and Boo will forever have my heart ❤ So now I’m going to wear my heart on my nails!

I wanted to incorporate my two favorite characters into the design, Mike and Sully. Mike, I knew, would be easy to put on my nails, because he fits the general shape. Sully, on the other hand, would be a challenge. To amend the situation, I opted to pay an “ode to Sully” on my pointer finger, middle finger, and pinky, painting my nails with a mix of Wet n’ Wild Megalast in I Need a Refresh-mint and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Blue Me Away, and then painting on splotches of purple with a toothpick by using a mix of e.l.f. Skinny Jeans and Sinful Colors Dream On. To create Mike, I started out with two coats of Sinful Colors Innocent (CAUTION: Always use base coat with this polish, it stains like crazy!). I then drew a white circle with Sinful Colors Snow Me White to create an eye, then put a medium size dot of a mix of Skinny Jeans and Innocent to make the iris, followed by a dot of Love and Beauty Black to create the pupil. I also outlined the top part of the eye very thinly with a toothpick to create a crease. For the mouth, I used black to create a smiling face, the used Snow Me White to dot on teeth, and Mike was done! For my thumb, I used Skinny Jeans over Snow Me White to draw the Monsters Inc. logo freehanded. I SOOO love the results! Pictures below are without topcoat.

So what do you guys think? Are you a fan of this monstrous mani? What’s your favorite Disney/Pixar movie of all time? Let me know in the comments!

31DC2013 Day 21- Inspired by a Color (Emerald)

Hi everyone!

So today, I have something a bit different for you. My inspiration today is from the color emerald (since today’s 31DC2013 challenge is inspired by a color), but there’s a bit of a twist. I picked emerald because it also happens to be the color of my makeup look of the day! Emerald is SUPER on trend this fall. I bet we’ll see a lot of emerald on the red carpet at the Emmy’s tomorrow night! So, I guess today, The Polish Influenza is going to become The Makeup Influenza!

The design I’ve done on my eyes today is kind of a sophisticated grunge look. It features heavy black eyeliner, softened by a bright emerald highlight in the inner corner of the eye. Here is the look!

Eyes1

Yes, those are my eyes 🙂

To achieve the look, I started by covering my lids with Urban Decay Primer Potion. In my opinion, it’s the absolute best eyeshadow primer out there. My eyeshadow lasts all day long with barely any creasing when I wear it! I then took an Essence Long Lasting Eye Pencil in 12 I Have a Green (a gorgeous, sparkly green emerald) and colored in my inner corner, making sure to get in my waterline and tight-line. I then took an e.l.f. Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil in Black and lined the rest of my eyes, smoking it out with my finger to make it look less harsh. PRO TIP: To get a creamy consistency of any eyeliner pencil, hold it over a source of heat (like a flat iron for hair) in order to warm it up first. Just be careful not to burn yourself!

I then took I Have a Green one more time and blended it up from my inner corner onto the inner lid. Over top of that, I took a bright green shimmer color from the BH Cosmetics 120 Palette 1st Edition and used my finger to dab it over I Have a Green, and blended it out with an e.l.f. studio Blending Brush. The green shadow helps to intensify the color of the green eyeliner. On the lower part of my lids, I took the color Gunmetal from the original Urban Decay Naked Palette, and blended it onto my lid with my finger and a blending brush. I finished off the look by applying two coats of Rimmel Scandaleyes Show Off Mascara in 001 Black to both my upper and lower lashes. And voila! Gorgeous eyes ready for a night on the town!

eyes

This makeup look served as my emerald-themed inspiration for the 31DC2013 today! For my nails, I started out with a base of Sephora by OPI Bring on the Snowflakes, a bright, metallic silver foil shimmer. I only needed one coat despite it being somewhat patchy. I then took Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Emerald City (a shimmery dark emerald) and China Glaze Smoke and Mirrors (from the Hunger Games collection- a deep black with green and blue shimmer running through it) and put little dots of color in random places over the nail. I then took a piece of cellophane and crumpled it up, and used it to spread the polish dots over my nails in a marbled design. The saran wrap nail design is super popular these days, and I love how my take on it turned out! It almost looks like the surface of a precious stone! Pictures below are with OPI Topcoat.

I hope you guys like my attempt at a makeup look today. It probably won’t be a regular thing (unless you want it to be!) but I definitely wanted to try my hand at the beauty guru thing! Hopefully it was a success!

If you like either of the looks I showed you today, please, share them on social media! I always appreciate your amazing support 🙂

Tomorrow’s 31DC2013 challenge is Inspired by a Song. Oh my… please. Leave me some song suggestions. I’m so stumped on this one!

31DC2013 Day 19- Galaxy Nails!

Hi earthlings!

Today I have for you a super fun, outer-space inspired manicure! I’m gonna have to admit to you guys, this was the challenge I’ve been the most nervous about. Looking at other galaxy nails scares me a bit- they all look sooooo complicated! Thankfully, with the help of some youtube tutorials (thanks again to cutepolish!) and some sponging practice, I think I’ve gotten the hang of it! I hope you’ll like it!

I started out with two coats of Love and Beauty Black polish. Once that dried, I tore off a piece of a makeup sponge to make sure the edges of the sponge were kind of jagged (it helps keep the design look blended and not so stark). I dipped the sponge in Sinful Colors Snow Me White (making sure there was barely any polish on the sponge) and dabbed the white in stripes across my nail to look like the bases of little nebulas. After letting the white dry, I took the same sponge, dipping it this time into e.l.f. Sunflower, a slightly shimmery yellow. I sponged this all over the white area, trying to concentrate the color near one specific area of the white (it’s up to you to pick where you want that area to be). After letting that dry, I took a pink, Wet n’ Wild Shine in Lavender Creme, to repeat the same sponging technique. Now let me pause for a moment. Lavender Creme. REALLY Wet n’ Wild? This color is a hot pink, there’s nothing lavender about it… Usually Wet n’ Wild is pretty spot on with their super cute and creative names, but this just confuses me…. But enough of that tangent. Back to the design! Once the pink dries, I took a navy polish (Rue Beauté 043) and dabbed it on the outer edges of the nebulas to blend them in. I wanted the design to look super blended, so I was generous with the navy. I then took a toothpick and Snow Me White and dabbed tiny stars in random areas across the nail, and put bigger dots to represent larger stars in the middle of the nebulas. To finish off, I took Ulta Salon Formula Nail Color in Glitter Topcoat to create even tinier stars on the nails. And ta da! Done! Aren’t they out of this world? (totally pun intended). Pictures below are without topcoat!

Artificial, indoor light

Artificial, indoor light

Some of the white dots smeared a bit when I applied the glitter topcoat, but I like how that looks. It almost reminds me of shooting stars! In this case, the smudging is a good thing!

I hope you all like this design! I’m really proud of how it turned out! And I promise, it’s easy. It’s so impressive looking, but it takes, like, 15 minutes to do. The longest waiting you’ll do is for your black polish to dry! If you like this look, please share it on social media, and make sure to share your galaxy designs with me, as well!

Tomorrow is water marbling day! We all know I’m a huge fan of this technique, so I hope I can come up with something amazing for you!
